On May 14, 2016, Southeast celebrated Disability Awareness Day. Special guests were Allegheny West Conference Disability Coordinator, Sharon Bowen and Mr. Anil Lewis, Speaker for Divine Worship. Special music from Southeast’s Deaf Ministry Department was a sign language solo from Deborah Miller, Assistant Disability Coordinator for Southeast.
Mr. Lewis is the Executive Director of the Jernigan Institute at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), and a President Obama appointee. The mission of the NFB is “ to understand the real problems of blindness and to develop innovative education, technologies, products, and services that help the world’s blind to achieve independence.”
Throughout his career, Mr. Lewis has embodied this mission in each position that he has served in for the NFB.
Anil Lewis shared his personal story during divine worship and also after service during a lively, spirited Lunch and Learn workshop which was well-attended by the congregation and many in the community at large.
At the age of nine years old, he was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a medical condition, which causes blindness and had also afflicted his siblings. It wasn’t until 1989, at age 25 years old that he became blind while attending Georgia State University.
Mr. Lewis is known nationally as an effective and energetic advocate for the blind community and was a leader on the NFB research project, Blind Driver Challenge.
Mr. Lewis has been the recipient of the 2003 Georgia State University Torch Bearer of Peace award and in 2004, the Paul G. Hearn Advocacy Award from the American Bar Association. His proudest accomplishment is his son Amari, born in 1997.
