On Sabbath (4/24/21), Pastor Stan Hood and Elder Alisa Hood concluded their tag team preaching on the series, “My Sister’s Keeper.”
Pastor Hood delivered a beautiful message taken from 2 Kings 4:8-10, entitled “Make Room for God.” The message involved the story of the Shunammite woman, whom Pastor Hood referred to “as a great woman.” Pastor Hood stated that although the bible is largely patriarchal, “God is blessing great women.” She knew the importance of making room for God.
The story demonstrates how this woman literally made room for God. She and her husband would provide a meal for the prophet Elisha and his servant whenever they passed through town. After a while, the Shunammite woman felt it would be a good idea to fix up a room for the prophet in their home. The prophet was so touched by her kindness, that he stated, “What may be done for you?” She stated, “I live among my own people,” meaning she was fine. Still, the prophet wanted to do something for her.
Elisha discovered that a child was her deepest desire and prayed to that end. She and her husband had a son. The child was in the field with his father one day and began to complain of a serious headache. The father told him to go to his mother. The child sat in his mother’s lap and died. The Shunammite woman laid the child on the prophet’s bed and set out to find the prophet. Elisha came back with her and went into the room with the child. Through prayer, Elisha raised the child back to life in the room where his mother had literally, made room for God.
The story demonstrates both the faith and strength of this praying woman who knew the importance of taking time out for God and also how Elisha was his sister’s keeper.
