On Sabbath, January 1, 2022, First Elder Richard Russell opened the new sermon series “Strange Tears,” with his sermon entitled, “Running to Win.”
Elder Russell preached from Ecclesiastes 9:1, “I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.” (NIV)
Elder Russell noted that Goliath the strong didn’t win the battle; the young man David did. The victory comes to those who endure to the end.
Using his own personal experiences in track and field, Elder Russell illustrated the importance of setting goals with the objective to win. He also shared his own testimony, describing how he turned his back on a life of sin and made a promise to God that he would live for him until he dies.
Elder Russell encouraged individuals to be active in their church, reminding those listening that everyone has a talent. “Sometimes you don’t know what you can do until you try. If someone asks you to serve, say yes.” He added, that “you need dedication to finish your goal, but you can do it, “if you keep God as your coach.”
In the year 2022, Elder Russell stated that he “hopes everyone has a goal for Jesus.” Emphasizing the importance of running and finishing the Christian race, Elder Russell stated that, “I don’t want a medal or a trophy—I want a crown.”
In II Tim.4:7-8, believers are strengthened by this promise: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me on that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
