delores burge The spotlight this week is focused on Southeast’s honorary member, Sister Deloise Burge.

Deloise joined the sign language class and Hands In Ministry (HIM) sign choir in 2001. She had always been interested in learning sign language and when sign student, Claudette Wesley told her about the community outreach class being conducted at Southeast, Deloise joined as one of more than ten students from the community. There were just as many students who were members, and Sister Ethel Walker brought the name of Hands In Ministry to the choir and it was unanimously embraced.

Deloise’s signing skills have progressed year by year and now she is the assistant instructor for the sign language class, held on Mondays from 6:15 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. Deloise is much loved for her commitment to God and her friendliness to everyone she meets. She has participated in every play, concert and workshop held by the Deaf Ministry Department. When HIM was on the regular schedule for worship service, Deloise was there as a faithful member. She is still a member of HIM when the choir is invited to participate on special days.

Deloise has also participated in the Southeast Mass Choir, and Southeast Adult Choir throughout the years and has sung solos for our worship hour and for Sabbath school.

Deloise is also very active in her church, Original Church of God- Miles Hts location, where Rev. Ollie King is the pastor. Her brother and his wife, serve as Assistant pastors. Deloise has been the Minister of Music at her church for more than 20 years and she served as the National Minister of Music for the Original Church of God from 1994-2015. Deloise has a beautiful voice, directs the choir and plays various instruments, including the piano. Deloise has been employed as a cook at University Hospital for 43 years and teaches sign language to children, 1 to 4 years old at Ages & Stages. Deloise has appreciated being welcomed by the entire Southeast congregation and all of the Pastors, from Pastor Booker to Pastor Hurst. She encourages everyone she meets, remarking “Everyone should continue to look to God because only what you do for Christ will last”.
